ms1605ParticipantHey IF’ers,
There is something that hasn’t made sense to me for a while now and it finally got to me enough to where I decided to hop online and see if I can find the answer. So as a very general rule of thumb, it should take the average person 36 to 40 hours to get into ketosis. Again, this is very general and obviously has a lot of variables but let’s just throw a number on it.
Ever since I started learning about intermittent fasting (about 2 years ago), I’m constantly seeing videos and reading things online where people talk about their non keto diet and intermittent fasting and how they get into ketosis X amount of hours after breaking a fast and they are “burning fat” until it is time for them to break their fast again.
Heres the thing, if you are not eating a keto diet when you break your fast and it takes the average person well over 24 hours to get into ketosis that means you would have to be fasting for well over 24 hours in order to get into ketosis in between you’re fasting and feeding periods.
So to simplify it let’s just use one meal a day.
You go 23 hours fasting and then you break your fast for one hour with a non Keto meal. You are not in ketosis because you just ate a bunch of carbs. There is no way that you are going to get into ketosis even by fasting 23 more hours until your next feeding period.
So are all these people that I read about and watch videos on that don’t do keto but yet still talk about getting into ketosis at some point during their fast all just completely delusional?
I have experimented with myself and Ben in ketosis for several days and then broken a fast with under 100 carbs. Clearly a non keto meal And even with under 100 carbs it still took me almost 30 hours to get back into ketosis and that is with me working and extremely physical job AND going to the gym.
So I guess I just don’t see how these people are talking about eating carbs during their feeding window and still getting into ketosis during their fasts.

AlexaFitParticipantYes, when you fast for short periods (<24 hrs) you should not be going into ketosis. It is not necessary for fat loss and is highly overrated as a means of fat loss. Same for low carb. It is a one trick pony sold as the miracle cure for your fat by all sorts of snake oil salesmen who need a gimmick.
The bottom line for weight loss is a simple sustainable eating pattern, a tailored deficit and a progressive change in habits and mindset. There are no magic formulas for weight loss besides deficit eating. Food choices are yours and there are no good foods/ bad foods or eliminating whole food groups. That kind of diet is counterproductive since it is unsustainable. This is about teaching you to make food choices for yourself that work for your life and your tastes.

IsabelleParticipantJust a calorie deficit works fine for me, most of people succeeded with this process not worrying the slightest about ketosis.
All you need to know is that achieving ‘ketosis’ is not necessary to get into great shape.
Ketosis is a normal physiological state that arises when you’re on an extended fast. It’s just part of how your body metabolizes fat when you’re not eating.
Sure it’s an indication that you’ve not eaten in a while, but it’s not a necessity for losing bodyfat, and keep in mind that you’re burning fat all of the time, the only thing that changes is the percentage of calories that are coming from fat or glycogen.
