PamParticipantI’ve searched through the threads on fasting and I’ve seen where people say that consuming more than 50 calories essentially breaks the fast … here’s my question … is that 50 calories at a time (i.e. every snack has to be under 50 calories) or is it for the entire 24 hours? My first fast day is coming up on the 5th, so figured I’d better find out now before I do it wrong. 🙂

lindaParticipant50 calories total breaks the fast so if your morning coffee has 52 calories of creamer the fast is broken.

IsabelleParticipantWhat Lisa says is true but mainly fasting is just a tool to manage your calories. The longer your window of NOT eating (the fast) the less time you will spend eating and hopefully will eat less. That is the main factor, although there are certainly a few hormone benefits that help give a slight edge.
The main point is that over time, it doesn’t have to be exactly 24 hours, nor will it hurt if you need some coffee with cream or a snack that is over 50 calories anytime you feel you need it.
