barbaraParticipantI ask because my friends recommended I take it to stop my feet from cramping at night and to help me sleep. So, I tried samples of a powdered kind that dissolves in water and then you drink it. Like a tonic. But both nights I took it, I was wide awake for three hours. I didn’t get cramps, so that was nice not be awakened in the middle of the night with painful foot cramps.
Would a less soluble, slower release form be better, like a tablet or pill instead of a fizzy tonic? The fastest way to absorb something into your bloodstream is in an effervescent drink. Remember that next time you need to get drunk fast. Vodka in a few ounces of Squirt soda…slam!

carolParticipantI take ZMA which has Zinc, Magnesium, and Vitamin B6 and is designed for muscle recovery and it helps me sleep.
Muscle cramps can be from a variety of mineral or electrolyte imbalances. I tried all the common fixes like electrolytes and potassium and that didn’t fix anything for me. For me I needed calcium (I use New Chapter bone strength) and the ZMA and I’m all good now.
I still take a zero calorie sports electrolyte packet every morning.

lauraParticipantZMA yes, you should definitely try that. Also NOW makes a soft gel Magnesium, Calcium, Vit D supplement. The soft gel is fairly bioavailable and it is what I use. I’m glad the magnesium helped your foot cramps!
I had terrible debilitating cramps in my feet and legs that no mixture of electrolyte supplementation would even TOUCH. But once I got my thyroid treated they went away like magic. I think it was a core body temp thing for me. Applying a heating pad to the cramping area always helped. So it kinda makes sense that once I got my internal fire burning a little brighter, the cramping stopped.

barbaraParticipantI take a daily multi-vitamin: Rainbow Light Menopause One. It has everything and then some. I also take 2000 of D and a 500 calcium chew with added D and K. So, I thought I was good. My doctor recommended all the extra D. I’d just like to sleep more soundly and get rid of the night time cramps, but this tonic form of magnesium did not do it for me.

SaraParticipantI take a multi with 100% DV iron along with a fish oil and Mg / Ca tablet around lunch time. If I forget the Mg/Ca, I am awakened by calf cramps from SATAN at night!

barbaraParticipantYes. And an easy way to stop those terrible cramps at once is to eat a tsp. of yellow mustard. I carry mustard condiment packs in my purse and in my seat bag on the bike, just in case.
But it would be really nice to prevent them from happening in the first place.

carolParticipantOh my gosh I tried this recently and it works. None of my supplements are working, and a banana didn’t work either, but the mustard did. So the first time I mixed the mustard in some juice and chugged it down. Now I’m just including it in a meal every day, on lunch meat and cheese, or mixed in with my vinegar salad dressing.
I have no idea why but my upper right side ab muscle gets charlie horse cramps randomly, even when I drink lots of water, electrolytes, the know supplements, etc. It’s been this same muscle for YEARs now.. so weird.
I wish I know what was up with that muscle cramping, it happens randomly, when I go to tie my shoes, or when I’m driving in the car and it REALLY HURTS.
If anyone has specific knowledge about why we get charlie horse cramps in a specific muscle like that all the time I would love to hear it. It’s been that same freaking muscle for YEARS now. I’ve been through several seasons of eating patterns now, it’s always the same muscle, on the same side. So weird.

barbaraParticipantI carry mustard packages in my purse for random muscle cramps. It’s easy to pick up a few at any convenience store that sells grilled hot dogs.
I get a spasm in my left, upper abs sometimes when I bend over to tie a shoe or if I’m crouching for whatever reason. Very painful, but if I relax it goes away. Time to ask my doctor what’s going on.

AnnaParticipantHas someone listened to the Underground Wellness podcast “Magnesium Deficiency”? The guy (forgit his name) explains it in detail that magnesium is needed to deal with sugar and calcium and since our diets are low in magnesium and high in calcium and sugars, this combination is – or so he claims – the road to disaster. He also says the usually recommended amount of 350mg per day may not be enough and encourages people to experiment with higher intakes.
I have no idea if I have been deficient, but my digestion has the tendency to go very slow, so I thought I might give it a shot. I think it helped and a double dose seemed to uhm… speed things up, so I cut back to the normal supplementation dose of 350mg. I have no idea how high my intake from nutrition is, but it may very well be that my nutrition plus the 350mg from supplements are the ideal dose for me.
I think I will keep supplementing, especially when I take calcium.

IsabelleParticipantI think the problem with the calcium:magnesium ratio, at least in America, (don’t know about other countries) is the fact that so much dairy, orange juice and cereals are fortified with it. So the average American doesn’t even need to take extra calcium to be imbalanced. And yeah, the wording on eggs is so misleading! When we were in CT there was a local farm very convenient and close to us that had happy chickens running around eating up all the bugs and good stuff they could find. We would watch them play and just be chickens. Great eggs. Nice bright yellow yolks. If we didn’t move around so much I’d like to keep chickens. They make me smile)
